The word balayage is taken from the French word meaning “to sweep”.
Balayage is a freehand technique in which swatches of hair are sectioned and hand painted with a lightening agent against a backing board. After painting, each swatch is covered in cellophane.
Due to the freehand technique balayage highlights are less symmetrical, resulting in more random highlights to create a more casual, beachy look as opposed to traditional foil techniques. Balayage is a great option if you like the look of chunkier highlights with more contrast and less blonde.

The use of foils to create natural looking highlights is a technique we use regularly at House of Lox. By isolating selected strands and sections of hair and applying colour, lightener or toner within a section of foil, we can create a blended look similar to natural sun-kissed highlights.
