Looking after your extensions is extremily important, here are our top 4 tips for caring for your hair extensions.
#1 Washing Hair Extensions
Wash your hair extensions as normal, generally a minimum of twice a week. But if you have particularly oily roots then approximately 3 to 4 times a week may be needed as natural oil can cause slipping on extremely oily hair. Your hair extensions don’t receive the oils from your scalp that your natural hair does, so don’t overuse the products as it will shorten their lifespan. However, after swimming or working out always wash your hair to get rid of sweat or chemicals. Try not to get conditioner, oil or anything similar near the roots of your hair.
We also recommend avoiding sulphate products when it comes to washing your extensions as they increase your hair tangling. At House of Lox we use and recommend Seamless1 shampoos and conditioners. Another tip is to always use warm water, when it comes to your hair extensions hot and cold water can damage and not properly wash them.
#3 Drying Hair Extensions
Blow drying is highly recommended. Wet hair extensions can get tangled and knotty at the roots, especially if you sleep on wet hair. So, make sure its dry before you go to bed. Sometimes plaiting your hair before bed can help prevent further knotting while sleeping. Another tip when swimming in the ocean or in swimming pools with chlorine is to plait, braid or tie your hair up. Occasionally chlorine can cause colourisation to your extensions. Try not to get sunscreen near your extensions it may leave a pinky tinge behind!
#2 Brushing Hair Extensions
There’s some specific hair brushes made exclusively for hair extensions. Using a tangle teezer hair brush will reach all the knots and gently detangle. Avoid wide tooth hair brushes they may not brush out all knots and using a comb can cause pulling and essentially rip out the hair.
Always brush your extensions before you wash them, start at the bottom and work your way towards the top. This way they will be thoroughly cleansed through. Your extensions are weakest when wet so try to avoid brushing them.
#4 Using Heat Products
Heat products, like blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons, will damage your hair extensions causing them to not last as long. Use a heat protectant spray and lower heat setting when using heat on your hair extensions. Using Seamless1 leave in conditioner and Olaplex bond smoother can help protect and further moisturise. Also applying Olaplex oil after can increase the shine of your hair.
Looking after your extensions can improve the longevity and keep them looking great for longer. Tape extensions generally can last for 3 – 6 months. Keratin bonds need to be replaced each time but can last 3-5 months. You can extend the life of your Weft and bead extensions greatly by taking the best care of them they can last anywhere between 6-12 months.
Clip ins do tend to have a longer life span due to not being left in the hair 24/7. But again depending on how well they are taken care will change how long they will last before needing replacement
