When going blonde to brunette?

by Ella Levy, House of Lox Sydney, Senior Hair Stylist.

Most of us have attempted at some time to go from brunette hair to blonde, but how many of you can say you’ve gone blonde to brunette? From fading to maintenance to cost, I’m going to share some knowledge.

It’s a tough choice

It can take weeks to come to a final decision for most, which shade will look best, undertones, warmth? Ash? Chestnut?. Being time consuming and costly. Always take into consideration if you change your mind a lot as it’s a long process back to blonde.

A long process

There can be few steps to going darker. If you are looking for more of a ash tone, filling the underlying pigment in the hair (so unwanted colours don’t appear) then applying the desired shade over the top as a second application.

More than likely you’ll need to come back in about 6 weeks later for a retouch. Going blonde to brunette can be a lengthy process to achieve the best result -be prepared. To go back to being darker isn’t as easy as just throwing on some colour on top of your blonde as many people think.

Fading!

Most the time you will find you colour fades, after a few washes you will find your hair can lose a few shades of colour, this can come down to a few things such as, using the wrong shampoos and conditioners. Using a non-fade shampoo will help lock the colour in, or by using a pigment mousse/conditioner this will help with home care.

When straightening your hair and using heat this will cause fading, always using a heat protector, that also has colour protector in it too. Fading is inevitable but just using these few tips will help the longevity of your colour. If your hair is dry and porous, then your hair will most likely be more prone to fading. The condition of your hair plays a big factor in how your colours will turn out.

Always go to a professional

It makes sense right? You wouldn’t want to touch your hair with bleach yourself? So why not also go to a professional when going back to your natural roots? The price tag may seem appealing on a supermarket box dye, but the overall result likely will not be. You may also find as you aren’t pre-filling the hair properly, and to the correct manner, that your hair could start turning into all sorts of colours…which could then turn into a whole new playing field.

Your hair will not become healthy overnight

Unfortunately for some, they believe that covering over bleached, brittle blonde hair will help the condition but it will not. This will just give you hair a break from harsh bleach, but it will not result in a magic fix. If your hair was damaged pre-brunette your hair will also be damaged post brunette. BUT as time goes on and your damaged hair grows out you will find your hair in a better condition. However this is a process and it will take time.

Consider hair extensions

Hair extensions can be a great way to boost your length and volume as well as add some luscious healthy hair in a new shade to your existing damaged hair.

When fitted properly by a trained professional tape hair extensions are an excellent way to achieve a dramatic transformation and have you screaming “hair goals” in no time, whilst simultaneously allowing your natural hair time to grow and strengthen over time with a rest from the bleach. We often have new clients come to us with short, damaged blonde hair, wanting their long locks back and to go back to the dark side, and with clever use of hair extensions we are able to have them leaving the salon with the look they want in a single visit.
